The mission of the "REAL MEN COOK" Foundation Center for Early Detection of Prostate Cancer is to see that every man has the opportunity to say -"I beat prostate cancer." Our goal is to bring education, awareness about prostate cancer, erectile dysfunction, and screening of high- risk men 45 years or older to the minority community.
Prostate Cancer is the most common form of cancer, other than skin cancer, among men in the United States, and it is second only to lung cancer as a cause fo cancer-related death among men. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2003, about 220,900 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed and 28,900 men will die of the disease. About 70% of all diagnosed prostate cancers are found in men aged 65 years or older. Over the past 20 years, the survival rate for prostate cancer has increased from 67% to 97%. The prostate cancer rate is higher for African-American men than for any other racial or ethnic group. Women’s Group Cancer Education Program Herman Jordan, President/CEO Jordan Group, has assumed the leadership role to speak to black women’s church groups and sororities as to the importance of saving the lives of their men from prostate cancer. Obesity Prevention Program The “REAL MEN COOK” Foundation is partnering with Gloria Davis, Executive Director of the Girls Club of Los Angeles to bring obesity prevention at the Pre-K level. Links Achievement Program Uli Carter, President/CEO of Home Repairs will be Director of the Refurbishing Program to empower young black men in high school through community service and the refurbishment of homes in a single day. This year, one home will be refurbished in honor of Larry McCormick and in 2006 the other will be in honor of Michael Stennis. Prostate Cancer Youth Volunteer Program The “REAL MEN COOK” Foundation will award each student volunteer a certificate of community service, with hours served to present to their high school. As college admission has become increasingly competitive, community service and involvement will be an asset to all volunteer participants. The primary function of a student volunteer is to: help men sign-in at the registration table, assist men with their questionnaire and laboratory forms and help men navigate through the screening process.
